What happened to BBVA Compass / BBVA USA?
BBVA Compass (which had renamed itself BBVA USA in 2019) was the U.S. retail banking subsidiary of Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA), the Spanish multinational bank. In November 2020, BBVA announced the sale of its entire U.S. operations to PNC Bank of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for $11.6 billion. The sale closed in May 2021 and the brand conversion was completed in October 2021 — with branches closing as BBVA at 2:00 PM on October 8, 2021 and reopening as PNC on October 12, 2021.
The deal added 637 former BBVA branches across 7 states to PNC’s network, expanding PNC’s footprint into Texas, Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, and New Mexico — markets where PNC previously had little or no retail presence. PNC’s footprint now spans approximately 27 states plus D.C. (further expanded in February 2026 via the Huntington–Cadence merger reshuffle).
The BBVA brand still exists internationally — BBVA continues to operate retail banks in Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, and several other countries. However, BBVA no longer has any retail banking operations in the United States. If you’re looking for BBVA outside the U.S., visit bbva.com.
States the former BBVA Compass served
Before the 2021 acquisition by PNC, BBVA Compass / BBVA USA operated branches in 7 states, with more than half its branches in Texas:
- Texas — by far the largest BBVA market, with more than 300 branches (BBVA’s North American HQ was in Houston)
- Alabama — BBVA Compass’s historic home state (the predecessor bank, Compass Bank, was founded in Birmingham in 1964)
- Arizona — Phoenix metro and other AZ cities
- California — Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, and other California metros
- Colorado — Denver and surrounding areas
- Florida — Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, and other FL cities
- New Mexico — Albuquerque and other NM cities
All of these states are now part of PNC’s 27-state retail footprint. To find a branch at a former BBVA location, simply use the PNC locator — the same physical branches you used as BBVA customers are still there, now under the PNC brand.
