Deposit the same check at 9:30 p.m. and it might post today or two days from now, depending entirely on which bank you use. ATM deposit cutoffs at the eight biggest U.S. banks range from 8 p.m. local time (Bank of America, U.S. Bank) to 11 p.m. Eastern at Chase, the latest in the industry. Cash availability splits too: six banks credit cash immediately, while Chase’s published rule is next business day. This page compares all of it, cutoffs, cash and check availability, and holds, with every rule verified against the bank’s own policy documents.

Cutoff times: Eastern Time vs local time

Watch the timezone basis, it changes the math for anyone west of the East Coast. Chase (11 p.m. ET), Citi (10:30 p.m. ET), PNC (10 p.m. ET), Truist (9 p.m. ET), and Capital One (9 p.m. ET) run one national clock, which shrinks the window on the West Coast (Chase’s 11 p.m. ET is 8 p.m. Pacific). Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and U.S. Bank use local time at the machine, so the deadline feels the same everywhere. Miss the cutoff, or deposit on a weekend or holiday, and the deposit is treated as made the next business day.

Cash deposits: immediate almost everywhere

Seven of the eight banks make ATM cash deposits available immediately or the same business day, the machine authenticates the bills on the spot, so there is nothing to clear. The outlier is Chase, whose published rule for most accounts is next-business-day availability with no separate same-day cash promise. If same-day cash credit matters and you bank with Chase, use a teller.

Check deposits: the $275 federal floor, and who beats it

Federal Regulation CC requires banks to make at least the first $275 of a day’s check deposits available the next business day. Within that floor, the banks differ meaningfully:

  • Wells Fargo may make some or all of a check available the same day when no hold applies.
  • PNC gives you the first $100 the same evening, and checks drawn on PNC clear that evening.
  • Most others deliver the full amount the next business day when no hold applies.
  • Citi stretches the standard schedule to two business days for the balance above $275.
  • Capital One savings accounts are the trap: 4 business day holds on most check deposits, vs next day into checking.

Holds, and the two banks that sell you a skip

Any bank can hold a check longer, typically 2 to 7 business days, for large deposits, new accounts, repeated overdrafts, or doubts about the check. Two banks offer a paid fast lane: PNC Express Funds (2.5% of the check over $100) and Truist Immediate Access (2% of checks of $100+, $1 under) both make approved checks available the same day. On a $1,000 check that is $25 and $20 respectively, worth it only when a payment lands tonight.

Practical rules that work at every bank

  1. Deposit before the cutoff on a business day, a Friday night deposit is effectively a Monday deposit with availability on Tuesday.
  2. Cash beats checks everywhere except Chase.
  3. Keep the receipt, deposit-scanning ATMs print check images, your proof if anything goes wrong.
  4. Recurring money should be electronic: direct deposit, ACH, and Zelle are typically same-day and never held.

Frequently asked questions

Which bank has the latest ATM deposit cutoff?

Chase, at 11 p.m. Eastern (8 p.m. Pacific). Citibank follows at 10:30 p.m. ET and PNC at 10 p.m. ET. The earliest cutoffs among major banks are 8 p.m. local time at Bank of America and U.S. Bank.

Are ATM cash deposits available immediately?

At Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citibank, U.S. Bank, Truist, and Capital One, yes, immediately, and PNC credits cash the same business day. Chase is the exception: its published rule is next-business-day availability for most accounts.

How much of a check deposit must be available the next day?

Federal Regulation CC requires at least $275 of a day’s check deposits to be available at the start of the next business day, even when the rest is held. Note the older $225 figure still cited on many sites was inflation-adjusted to $275 in July 2025.

What happens if I deposit at an ATM after the cutoff or on a weekend?

The deposit is treated as made the next business day. A Saturday deposit counts as Monday’s, and any hold or availability schedule runs from that business day.

Can I get same-day access to a check deposited at an ATM?

At two banks, for a fee: PNC Express Funds (2.5% of check amounts over $100) and Truist Immediate Access (2% of checks of $100 or more, $1 for smaller checks). Wells Fargo may also make some or all of a check available same-day at no charge when no hold applies.

Why do savings deposits clear slower at Capital One?

Capital One applies a 4 business day hold to most check deposits into savings-type accounts, vs next-business-day into checking. Deposit to checking first if you need the money quickly.

Can I deposit at another bank’s ATM?

Generally no, deposits only work at your own bank’s machines (PNC and Capital One extend this to some partner or Allpoint deposit-enabled ATMs). Other banks’ ATMs can only dispense cash from your card.

How long can a bank hold my ATM deposit?

Standard holds run 2 to 7 business days depending on the bank and reason: large deposits, new accounts, repeated overdrafts, or doubts about the check. Regulators allow up to about six business days for deposits at ATMs the bank does not own.
