How ATM deposits work at Bank of America

Bank of America ATMs take deposits directly, insert your cash or checks into the deposit slot and the machine reads them. There is nothing to fill out: no envelope, no deposit slip, no ATM deposit form. The receipt shows a summary of the cash you inserted and printed images of each check, which is worth keeping until the deposit fully clears. If your email address is linked to your Bank of America profile and you use a consumer debit or ATM card, you can get the receipt by email instead.

Deposits work around the clock, but the time and day determine when the deposit posts: before 8 p.m. on a business day, it posts that same day; after 8 p.m., or on a weekend or federal holiday, it is treated as deposited the next business day.

Cash deposits: available immediately

Cash deposited at a Bank of America ATM is available immediately, you can withdraw it or spend it on your debit card right away. The 8 p.m. cutoff only affects which business day the deposit is recorded on, which matters for things like covering a payment that posts overnight.

Note that you can only deposit cash to your Bank of America account at Bank of America’s own ATMs, at a financial center, not at other banks’ machines.

Check deposits: posting and funds availability

A check deposited at a Bank of America ATM by 8 p.m. on a business day posts the same day, and the funds are generally available the next business day. Federal Regulation CC requires at least $275 of a day’s check deposits to be available by the next business day even when the bank holds the remainder.

Bank of America may place a hold on some or all of a check when it needs to validate the check or collect the funds from the paying bank. When a hold is applied, it typically runs 2 to 7 business days. You will see the hold on the ATM screen or receipt at the time of deposit, or afterward in the Mobile Banking app, by email alert, or by mail.

Deposit holds: why they happen and how long they last

  • Why: the bank needs time to validate the check and collect the money from the check writer’s bank. Large deposits, new accounts, repeatedly overdrawn accounts, and checks the bank has reason to doubt are the usual triggers.
  • How long: typically 2 to 7 business days, depending on the reason for the hold.
  • Weekends: a deposit made on a weekend is considered deposited on Monday, the first business day, so a hold takes effect the next business day, Tuesday.
  • Can it be lifted early? No. Bank of America service representatives are not able to release deposited funds that are on hold.

ATM vs mobile vs financial center deposit

Deposit methodCutoff for same-business-day postingBest for
Bank of America ATM8 p.m. on a business dayCash (available immediately) and checks, 24/7 access
Mobile check deposit (app)9 p.m. ET for accounts opened in Eastern and Central time zones, 8 p.m. PT for Mountain and PacificChecks only, no trip needed
Teller at a financial centerDuring branch hoursLarge cash deposits, many checks, or anything that needs a banker

Mobile deposit does not accept cash, and non-Bank of America ATMs do not accept deposits to BofA accounts at all, so for cash your options are a Bank of America ATM near you or a teller at a Bank of America financial center.

How to get your money available faster

  • Cash beats checks when you control the form of payment, cash is available immediately.
  • Go electronic for recurring money: direct deposit, ACH transfers, wire transfers, and Zelle are typically available the same day and never subject to check holds.
  • Keep your receipt with the printed check images until the funds fully clear.

Frequently asked questions

What time is the Bank of America ATM deposit cutoff?

8 p.m. on a business day. Deposits made by then post the same day; deposits made after 8 p.m., or on weekends and federal holidays, are treated as deposited the next business day. Exceptions apply for some accounts, see your account agreement.

When will my check deposited at a Bank of America ATM be available?

Generally the next business day. Federal rules require at least $275 of it to be available by then. If Bank of America places a hold, the remainder typically becomes available within 2 to 7 business days.

Are cash deposits at Bank of America ATMs available immediately?

Yes. Cash deposited at a Bank of America ATM is available immediately. The 8 p.m. cutoff only determines which business day the deposit is recorded on.

Can I deposit cash at a non-Bank of America ATM?

The deposit is treated as made on the next business day. A Saturday or Sunday deposit counts as Monday’s deposit, and if a hold applies it takes effect on Tuesday.

Is there a limit on how much I can deposit at a Bank of America ATM?

Bank of America does not publish a dollar limit for ATM deposits. The machine does have physical limits on how many bills and checks it can accept in one transaction, so a very large deposit may take more than one insertion or a teller visit.

Do I need an envelope or deposit slip at a Bank of America ATM?
