Why your limit may be different from $1,000

Bank of America states that the amount you can withdraw from an ATM depends on several factors: the limits set for your card or account type, the availability of funds in your account at the time of the withdrawal, and in some cases the amount the ATM itself is capable of dispensing. So $1,000 is the standard ceiling, but the number attached to your specific card can differ, check yours in the Mobile Banking app under Manage Debit/Credit Card.

The 60-bill cap is a mechanical limit of the machine, and it interacts with bill denominations. If an ATM dispenses only $20 bills, 60 bills would be $1,200, so the $1,000 dollar cap is what stops you first. If you request smaller bills where available, the 60-bill cap can kick in before the dollar cap does.

How to increase your Bank of America ATM withdrawal limit

There are four official ways to raise (or lower) your daily ATM withdrawal limit:

  1. Mobile Banking app: select Menu, then Manage Debit/Credit Card. Make sure your debit card is unlocked, then choose Set Limits.
  2. Online Banking: go to the Information & Services tab for your account, then select “Set daily purchase and ATM withdrawal limits”.
  3. By phone: call the customer service number on the back of your card and ask for a limit change.
  4. In person: visit any Bank of America financial center near you and ask a banker to adjust the limit.

You can set any amount within the range Bank of America allows for your account type. Lowering your limit is also a common fraud-protection move, a stolen card can only drain up to the daily cap you set.

Debit card vs ATM-only card: which limits apply

Bank of America issues two kinds of cards that work at its ATMs:

  • Debit card: has two separate daily limits, one for ATM cash withdrawals and one for purchases. Getting cash back at a store register is processed as a purchase, so it draws from your purchase limit, not your ATM limit. That makes cash back at checkout a practical way to get extra cash on a day you have already hit the ATM cap.
  • ATM card: some accounts come with an ATM-only card that cannot make purchases. It has just the daily ATM withdrawal limit.

Both card types can be managed from the Mobile Banking app, and both work at any Bank of America ATM for withdrawals, deposits, transfers, and balance inquiries at no fee.

Need more than $1,000 in cash? Your options

  • Raise your limit first: bump the daily ATM limit in the app before you head to the machine, then set it back afterward.
  • Go inside to a teller: withdrawals at the counter of a financial center are not subject to the ATM limit, only to your available balance. Bring your card and a photo ID. For very large cash amounts, it is smart to call the financial center ahead, branches keep limited cash on hand.
  • Use cash back at checkout: it counts against your debit purchase limit rather than the ATM limit.
  • Split the withdrawal across days: the limit is per day, so $1,000 today and $1,000 tomorrow needs no special arrangement.

How do I increase my Bank of America ATM withdrawal limit?

Teller withdrawals are not subject to the ATM limit, you are limited by your available balance. For very large cash amounts, call the financial center ahead of time, branches keep limited cash on hand and may need notice.

Bank of America does not publish an official reset time. The limit is a daily limit, so if you have hit the cap, plan on the withdrawal working again the next day, or raise the limit in the Mobile Banking app instead of waiting.

Does Bank of America charge a fee to use an ATM?

Bank of America ATMs are free for BofA customers for withdrawals, deposits, transfers, and balance checks. Your daily Bank of America limit still applies, and the ATM operator usually enforces its own per-transaction cap as well, often lower than your daily limit, so you may need multiple transactions (each with its own fees).
