The most useful thing to know about bank holidays is which days are federal holidays and which days are not, because that’s the line that decides whether your bank branch is open. The Federal Reserve recognises 11 federal holidays each calendar year, and almost every U.S. bank lobby is closed on each one. But three popular dates that LOOK like bank holidays are NOT federal holidays at all: Black Friday, Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve. Most banks stay open on those three (with reduced hours on Christmas Eve and NYE).
There is one major-bank exception worth knowing: TD Bank, which markets itself as “America’s Most Convenient Bank”, stays open on Columbus Day when nearly every other major bank is closed. A handful of states also observe additional bank holidays (Patriots’ Day in MA and ME, Election Day in eight states, Cesar Chavez Day in CA, CO, and TX) that the national Federal Reserve schedule does not.
When branches are closed, ATMs, online banking, mobile apps, and 24/7 phone customer service still work. The thing that DOES pause on a federal holiday is the Federal Reserve’s ACH network, which is why a payday landing on a holiday delays your direct deposit to the next business day, unless your employer ran payroll a business day or two early.
Below: the current-year federal calendar, a per-bank comparison for the holidays where policy actually varies, the open-or-closed verdict for every federal holiday plus Black Friday and Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, how cultural Sunday holidays (Easter, Mother’s and Father’s Day, Good Friday) are handled, state-specific bank holidays, the full direct-deposit-and-payday explainer, and what you can still do at the bank when the lobby is locked.

Are banks open today? (every federal holiday)
Are banks open on New Year’s Day?
No. Almost every U.S. bank branch is closed on January 1, including all Federal Reserve banks. ATMs and online banking remain available. Direct deposit and ACH transfers do not process on New Year’s Day and will arrive the next business day. If your payday falls on January 1, your employer either ran payroll a business day or two early (December 30 or 31) or your deposit posts the next business day.
Are banks open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day?
No. MLK Jr. Day (the third Monday of January) is a federal holiday and almost every U.S. bank branch is closed. ATMs and digital banking remain available. ACH transactions do not process. If your payday falls on MLK Day, your direct deposit posts the next business day (Tuesday).
Are banks open on Presidents Day?
No. Presidents Day (officially Washington’s Birthday, the third Monday of February) is a federal holiday. All U.S. bank branches are closed. ATMs and digital banking remain available. ACH transactions do not process on Presidents Day.
Are banks open on Memorial Day?
No. Memorial Day (the last Monday of May) is a federal holiday. Branches are closed nationwide. Many banks also have reduced staff for related Memorial Day weekend activities (Saturday and Sunday were already non-banking days). ATMs remain available 24/7.
Are banks open on Juneteenth National Independence Day?
No. Juneteenth (June 19) became the newest federal holiday in 2021, and the Federal Reserve and almost all U.S. banks observe it. Branches are closed on June 19. TD Bank is the notable mainstream exception that historically stayed open on some federal holidays, but TD has also closed for Juneteenth since the holiday was added. ATMs and online banking remain available. When June 19 falls on a Saturday, banks are closed the preceding Friday; when it falls on a Sunday, banks are closed the following Monday.
Are banks open on Independence Day (July 4)?
No. Almost every U.S. bank branch is closed on July 4. When July 4 falls on a Saturday, the Federal Reserve observes the holiday on the preceding Friday and branches close Friday. When July 4 falls on a Sunday, the holiday is observed Monday and branches close Monday. ATMs and digital banking remain available. (See the calendar table above for the observed date this year.)
Are banks open on Labor Day?
No. Labor Day (the first Monday of September) is a federal holiday. Branches are closed nationwide. ATMs and digital banking remain available.
Are banks open on Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples Day?
Mostly no, but with one major exception: TD Bank is open on Columbus Day (the second Monday of October). This is consistent with TD’s “America’s Most Convenient Bank” identity. Most other major banks (Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo, Citibank, U.S. Bank, PNC, Truist, etc.) close their branches. Federal Reserve banks are closed. Several states (Florida, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Iowa) and many cities observe Indigenous Peoples Day instead of Columbus Day; the bank schedule does not change.
Are banks open on Veterans Day?
No. Veterans Day is a federal holiday and almost all U.S. bank branches are closed on November 11, including TD Bank. ATMs and digital banking remain available. When November 11 falls on a Saturday, banks close the preceding Friday; when it falls on a Sunday, banks close the following Monday.

No. Christmas Day is a federal holiday. Every U.S. bank branch is closed on December 25. ATMs and digital banking remain available. Christmas Eve (December 24) is NOT a federal holiday and most banks are open with regular or slightly reduced hours. When December 25 falls on a Saturday, banks close the preceding Friday; when it falls on a Sunday, banks close the following Monday.
Cultural holidays banks DO open on (Black Friday, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve)
Three popular dates are often assumed to be bank holidays but are NOT federal holidays. Branches are usually open with regular or slightly reduced hours.
Are banks open on Black Friday?
Yes. Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) is NOT a federal holiday. All major U.S. banks operate with regular Friday hours on Black Friday, including TD Bank, Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank, PNC, Citibank, Truist, Fifth Third, Huntington, M&T, and Capital One. Drive-up tellers and ATMs operate normally. Stock and bond markets close at 1:00 PM ET, but retail banking is unaffected.
Are banks open on Christmas Eve?
Yes, but with reduced hours at many branches. Christmas Eve (December 24) is NOT a federal holiday. Most banks operate with shortened hours, typically closing 1 to 3 hours earlier than normal. Most large retail banks operate from mid-morning until early afternoon. Community banks sometimes close for the whole day. Online banking, the mobile app, and ATMs operate 24/7.
Are banks open on New Year’s Eve?
Yes, but with reduced hours at many banks. New Year’s Eve (December 31) is NOT a federal holiday. Most banks operate with shortened hours. Confirmed early-closing policies among major banks: M&T Bank closes at 3:00 PM local time, PNC Bank closes at 4:00 PM local time, TD Bank closes at 5:00 PM local time (instead of usual 6:00 PM). Other banks typically close 1 to 2 hours early. Confirm with your specific branch.
Cultural Sunday holidays (Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Good Friday)
Are banks open on Easter Sunday?
Easter Sunday is treated the same as a regular Sunday. Branches that are normally open on Sunday (TD Bank shopping-mall branches, U.S. Bank in Safeway, Woodforest in Walmart, Apple Bank, etc.) are usually open on Easter Sunday with their regular Sunday hours. Branches that are normally closed Sunday stay closed. Some supermarket-based bank branches may follow the host supermarket’s Easter Sunday hours (some Safeway, Vons, Albertsons, and Walmart stores close earlier on Easter). See our Banks Open on Sunday page for the list of Sunday-open banks.
Are banks open on Good Friday?
Yes. Good Friday is NOT a federal holiday in the United States. All major U.S. banks operate with regular Friday hours on Good Friday. (Note: stock markets close on Good Friday, but retail banking is unaffected.)
Are banks open on Mother’s Day (Sunday)?
Same as Easter: Mother’s Day is a Sunday, so it follows your bank’s regular Sunday schedule. Sunday-open banks (Woodforest in Walmart, U.S. Bank in supermarkets, TD shopping-mall branches, etc.) are open. Most other branches stay closed.
Are banks open on Father’s Day (Sunday)?
Same as Mother’s Day: Father’s Day is a Sunday, banks follow regular Sunday schedules. Sunday-open banks operate normal Sunday hours.
TD Bank’s “America’s Most Convenient Bank” holiday exception
TD Bank built its retail brand around extended weekend and holiday hours. TD’s distinctive holiday policy includes:
- Open on Columbus Day with regular Monday hours, when most other major banks are closed.
- Open on Black Friday and Christmas Eve with regular or near-regular hours.
- Reduced hours on New Year’s Eve, typically closing at 5:00 PM local time instead of the usual 6:00 PM.
- TD Bank IS closed on the standard 11 federal holidays (New Year’s Day, MLK, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day) except Columbus Day.
TD also has the broadest Saturday hours of any major bank (most TD branches open 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM Saturday) and the largest Sunday-open footprint among major banks (select shopping-mall branches open 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM Sunday).
When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday
The Federal Reserve schedule includes a specific rule for federal holidays that fall on a weekend:
- Holiday on Saturday: observed on the preceding Friday. Branches are closed Friday.
- Holiday on Sunday: observed on the following Monday. Branches are closed Monday.
This means that when a federal holiday falls on a weekend, you effectively get a three-day banking weekend. ATMs and online banking still operate during the entire weekend. (For the exact observed date of each holiday this year, see the calendar table above.)
State-specific bank holidays
A few states have additional bank holidays that the Federal Reserve does not observe nationally:
- Patriots’ Day (3rd Monday of April): observed as a bank holiday in Massachusetts and Maine. Branches in those states are closed. Most other banks elsewhere are open.
- Confederate Memorial Day / Confederate Heroes Day (varies by state, typically April or May): observed as a bank holiday in some Southern states (Alabama, Mississippi, parts of Florida historically). Branches in observing states may be closed.
- Lincoln’s Birthday (February 12): observed as a bank holiday in some states but not nationwide.
- Election Day (first Tuesday of November): observed as a bank holiday in some states (Delaware, Hawaii, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, West Virginia).
- Cesar Chavez Day (March 31): observed as a state holiday in California, Colorado, and Texas. Most banks remain open.
If you live in a state with additional bank holidays, check with your specific branch before visiting. The Federal Reserve’s calendar at federalreserve.gov is the authoritative national list, but state observances can vary.
How federal holidays affect your direct deposit and payday
This is one of the most-asked questions about bank holidays. The short answer: if your payday falls on a federal holiday, your direct deposit arrives the next business day, unless your employer processed payroll early.
Why this happens: the Federal Reserve’s ACH (Automated Clearing House) network processes electronic transfers Monday through Friday only and does not process on federal holidays. Direct deposits and most other electronic transfers are routed through ACH, so when ACH pauses, transfers pause.
What you can expect
- If your payday is on a federal holiday: your deposit will most likely post the next business day (the day after the holiday).
- If your payday is the day after a federal holiday: your deposit posts on that day as normal, but it depends on when your employer submitted payroll.
- Many employers run payroll one business day early to avoid holiday delays. In that case your deposit posts BEFORE the holiday.
- Some banks credit early: some banks like U.S. Bank and Chime offer “Early Pay” or “Get Paid Early” features that credit direct deposit up to two days before the official ACH posting date.
- Wire transfers processed on a federal holiday may also be delayed; check with your bank.
- Mobile check deposits submitted on a federal holiday count for the next business day.
Holidays most likely to delay your paycheck
- Labor Day (first Monday of September): if your normal payday is Monday, your deposit posts the next business day.
- Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday of November): if your normal payday is Thursday or Friday, your deposit may post the following Monday. Black Friday does process ACH for some banks but not all.
- Christmas Day (December 25): deposits scheduled for Christmas Day post the next business day after the holiday.
- New Year’s Day (January 1): paydays falling on New Year’s Day are delayed to the next business day.
What to do when banks are closed for holidays
Even when your bank’s branches are closed for a federal holiday, you have several options for banking around the clock:
- 24/7 ATMs: Almost every U.S. bank ATM is available 24 hours a day, including holidays. Most branch ATMs accept cash and check deposits via Envelope-Free Deposit or ATM Deposit. See our ATM Near Me page for ATMs nearby.
- Drive-thru ATMs: Most major banks have drive-up ATMs at standalone branches, accessible 24/7 even on federal holidays.
- Surcharge-free ATM networks: Allpoint serves many online banks and credit unions, and MoneyPass serves U.S. Bank, with tens of thousands of fee-free ATMs nationwide.
- Online banking and mobile apps: Every major U.S. bank has full online banking and a mobile app that runs 24/7, including bill pay, Zelle transfers, mobile check deposit, card lock and unlock, and account statements.
- 24/7 phone customer service: Bank of America credit card (1-800-421-2110), Chase credit card (1-800-432-3117), U.S. Bank 24-Hour Banking (1-800-USBANKS), Wells Fargo (1-800-869-3557), Truist credit card (844-4TRUIST), Citi credit card (1-800-950-5114), and most other major banks have round-the-clock phone support.
- AI virtual assistants: Bank of America’s Erica handles most account questions 24/7 in the BoA mobile app. NatWest has Cora. Chase has Chase Mobile.
- Lost or stolen card 24/7: Every major bank has a dedicated 24/7 number on the back of every card. This works on federal holidays.
- Cash back at retailers: If you need physical cash, debit-card cash back at supermarkets, big-box stores (Walmart, Target), and drug stores is available even when banks are closed.
Frequently asked questions
Are banks open on Black Friday?
Yes. Black Friday is NOT a federal holiday. All major U.S. banks operate with regular Friday hours on Black Friday, including TD Bank, Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank, PNC, Citibank, and others.
Are ATMs available on federal holidays?
Yes. ATMs are available 24/7 at almost every U.S. bank, including all federal holidays. Most branch ATMs accept cash and check deposits via Envelope-Free Deposit or ATM Deposit. Online banking and mobile apps also run 24/7 on holidays.
Can I deposit a check on a federal holiday?
Yes, three ways: (1) at a 24/7 branch ATM that supports deposits, (2) through your bank’s mobile app via Mobile Check Deposit, or (3) at a Sunday-open or holiday-open bank branch (like a TD Bank shopping-mall branch on Columbus Day, or Woodforest in Walmart on most days). Note: mobile and ATM deposits submitted ON a federal holiday count for the next business day, not the holiday itself.
Will my direct deposit clear if payday falls on a federal holiday?
Your direct deposit will most likely arrive the next business day after the holiday, unless your employer processed payroll early. Many employers proactively run payroll one business day early to avoid the delay. Some banks (U.S. Bank Early Pay, Chime, others) credit direct deposits up to two days before the official ACH posting date.
Are post offices and banks closed on the same days?
Generally yes. Both the U.S. Postal Service and the Federal Reserve observe the same 11 federal holidays, so post offices and banks are closed on the same days. The exception is that TD Bank (the major-bank holiday exception) stays open on Columbus Day while USPS is closed.
Are credit unions open on federal holidays?
Most credit unions follow the same Federal Reserve holiday schedule as banks and are closed on the 11 federal holidays. The largest credit union, Navy Federal Credit Union, is closed on all 11 federal holidays. A small number of in-store credit unions (Coastal Credit Union in some Lowe’s stores, etc.) may have shopping-mall or supermarket hours that differ.
Does Bank of America observe all federal holidays?
Yes. Bank of America branches are closed on all 11 federal holidays. ATMs, online banking, mobile banking, Erica virtual assistant, and 24/7 phone support (credit card 1-800-421-2110, mortgage 1-800-669-6607) remain available on holidays.
Why is TD Bank open on Columbus Day when other banks are closed?
TD Bank markets itself as “America’s Most Convenient Bank” and historically chose to remain open on Columbus Day as a customer-service differentiator. TD is closed on most other federal holidays (including Juneteenth, MLK, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day), but Columbus Day is the exception. TD also has the broadest Saturday hours and the largest Sunday-open footprint among major U.S. banks.
What time do banks close on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve?
Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are NOT federal holidays, so most banks are open with reduced hours. Confirmed early-closing policies: M&T Bank closes at 3:00 PM on New Year’s Eve, PNC Bank closes at 4:00 PM, TD Bank closes at 5:00 PM (instead of usual 6:00 PM). Other banks typically close 1 to 2 hours earlier on December 24 and December 31. Confirm with your specific branch.
Are banks open on Good Friday?
Yes. Good Friday is NOT a federal holiday in the United States. All major U.S. banks operate with regular Friday hours on Good Friday. (Note: U.S. stock and bond markets close on Good Friday, but retail banking is unaffected.)
Are banks open on Easter Sunday?
Easter Sunday is treated the same as a regular Sunday. Branches that are normally open on Sunday (TD Bank shopping-mall branches, U.S. Bank in Safeway/Vons, Woodforest in Walmart, Apple Bank in NY) are usually open on Easter Sunday with their regular Sunday hours. Most other branches stay closed. See our Banks Open on Sunday page for the full list.
What states have additional bank holidays?
Massachusetts and Maine observe Patriots’ Day (3rd Monday of April). A few Southern states observe Confederate Memorial Day. Delaware, Hawaii, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and West Virginia observe Election Day as a bank holiday in some years. California, Colorado, and Texas observe Cesar Chavez Day (March 31). Outside these states, the Federal Reserve’s national schedule applies.
