About Punjab National Bank

Punjab National Bank (PNB) is one of the oldest and largest banks in India and was the first Indian-owned bank registered under the Indian Companies Act. It was founded on 19 May 1894 in Lahore (in undivided British India, now in Pakistan) and opened for business on 12 April 1895. PNB was set up by a group of Indian nationalists led by Lala Lajpat Rai, alongside Dyal Singh Majithia, Dyal Singh Singh Bedi, and others, with the explicit aim of creating an Indian-managed and Indian-funded bank in response to the British-owned banks that dominated the colonial Indian banking sector at the time.

PNB’s original headquarters was in Anarkali Bazaar, Lahore. After the 1947 Partition of India, PNB lost its Lahore head office and many of its branches in what became Pakistan, but the bank rebuilt around its Indian branches and relocated its head office to New Delhi. Today PNB’s head office is at Plot No. 4, Sector 10, Dwarka, New Delhi 110075.

PNB was nationalised by the Government of India on 19 July 1969 along with thirteen other major Indian commercial banks.

The 2020 merger with Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India

On 1 April 2020, Punjab National Bank completed a three-way amalgamation with two other Indian public sector banks: Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC), a Punjab-based PSB founded in 1943 in Lahore, and United Bank of India (UBI), a Kolkata-based PSB founded in 1950. The amalgamation was announced by the Government of India in August 2019 as part of a consolidation of 10 PSU banks into 4 larger entities. After the merger PNB became the second-largest public sector bank in India after the State Bank of India, with over 10,000 branches and a strong combined footprint across northern, eastern, and western India.

Former Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India customers are now Punjab National Bank customers. IFSC codes have been reassigned to the PUNB prefix (former OBC ORBC and former UBI UTBI codes are no longer used).
