What happened to TCF Bank?
TCF Financial Corporation (the parent of TCF Bank) and Huntington Bancshares Incorporated announced their merger in December 2020. Shareholders of both companies approved the deal in March 2021, and the merger closed on June 9, 2021. The combined company kept the Huntington name, and the TCF brand was systematically retired over the following 18 months as TCF banking centers were rebranded as Huntington.
The merger combined Huntington’s strong Midwest presence (Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, West Virginia, Wisconsin) with TCF’s complementary footprint in Minnesota, Colorado, and South Dakota (which TCF had added via its own 2019 merger with Chemical Bank). The result was one of the largest regional banks in the country, with roughly 1,000 branches across 12 states post-merger. Huntington has since further expanded via its February 2026 acquisition of Cadence Bank, bringing its current footprint to approximately 1,400 branches across 21 states.
As part of the deal, Huntington divested 14 former TCF banking centers in Michigan to Horizon Bank (handling approximately $975 million in deposits) to satisfy regulators.
States the former TCF Bank served
Before the 2021 merger, TCF Bank operated branches in:
- Minnesota — historic TCF home state (TCF was founded in St. Paul in 1923)
- Michigan — major TCF market (post-2019 Chemical Bank merger)
- Illinois
- Wisconsin
- Colorado
- South Dakota
- Ohio
- Indiana
All of these states are now part of Huntington’s larger 21-state footprint. To find a branch at a former TCF location, simply use the Huntington locator — the same physical branches you used as TCF customers are still there, now under the Huntington brand.
